Stewart Donald Set to Sell Sunderland

This news comes in the light of the #DonaldOut campaign started by fan groups last Friday. The decision, which Donald made with “a heavy heart” means a big few weeks lie ahead.

Donald has always maintained he would not outstay his welcome at Sunderland, and clearly this time has arrived. His position has always been that he wanted to ‘get it right’ in regards to the Sunderland project. Unfortunately, this was not the case. He has stuck to his word with this news breaking. Barnes speaking on Total Sport has revealed that he is selling the club with a ‘heavy heart’.

The reports suggest that Donald has made this decision following last weeks fan-led protest online. #DonaldOut trended at number eight in the UK with four fan groups publishing a strongly worded statement demanding Donald sell. Clearly, he has listened to the fan’s anger.

The club is in a relatively healthy financial situation, with the only legacy payments remaining to be to ex-players Lee Cattermole and Bryan Oviedo. The loan from FPP Sunderland may be a problem for anyone attempting to buy the club. The group loaned £12million to the club back in November.

Of course, this news brings around a lot of speculation. The American FPP group is being tipped to complete the takeover that was touted in the summer. With the club still debt-free, Sunderland remains a good proposition for someone with ambition to take over.

The January transfer window opens on New Years Day, and with Sunderland struggling in League One, recruitment is necessary. Donald’s decision to sell Sunderland could severely hinder such activity, therefore completing a sale quickly should be a priority. Sunderland’s season is hanging in the balance, and such a sale could add more turmoil to what has already been a turbulent campaign.
