Burnley have signed Bristol City captain Josh Brownhill. The midfielder arrives as Burnley’s first January signing as Sean Dyche looks to ensure Burnley’s Premier League status.
Burnley Sign Midfielder Josh Brownhill From Bristol City
The Deal
Burnley announced via their website they had signed the midfielder. Brownhill arrives for a fee in the region of £7 million.
Bristol City manager Lee Johnson was reluctant to let his captain leave but with a much cheaper release clause taking effect in the summer, the Robins have negotiated the best fee.
Brownhill will make the step up to the Premier League for the first him in his career. The Bristol City captain has made his way up the Football League and now will get his chance in the big league.
He began his career at Preston North End before joining Barnsley on loan to link up with Lee Johnson. He impressed and eventually joined Bristol City following the expiration of his Preston contract.
The 24-year-old has been an ever-present since joining the Robins in 2016. He has been instrumental in their promotion push this season scoring five league goals. His leadership qualities and tenacious play will be sorely missed as Bristol City look to secure a play-off place.
Burnley Have Been on the Hunt for a New Midfielder
Sean Dyche has been looking to strengthen his midfield throughout this window and they are set to land their top target.
Burnley lost Danny Drinkwater early in the window after he was recalled by Chelsea and eventually loaned to Aston Villa.
Brownhill is unproven but, clearly, Dyche believes he can make the necessary step up and help Burnley ensure their Premier League status.
He is certainly a different midfielder to what they already have with Lee Johnson utilising him in a deeper role but allowing him to make forward runs.
Sean Dyche will be delighted to have him on board, and he could make his debut this weekend against Arsenal. That is dependent on all the paperwork being done before the eligibility deadline.
