Manchester United Make Surprising Move for Thomas Meunier
The Surprising Move from United could be for Experience
Manchester United are currently undergoing a rebuild which is very heavily focussing on youth.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given the likes of Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams a chance in the first team, and they have both taken it very well, cementing regular appearances there. Tahith Chong is among the others currently breaking out, while James Garner and Hannibal Mejbri look as if they could be ready for more game time next season.
Solskjaer has further demonstrated his trust in youth playing Manchester United’s youngest ever side in a European match during the side’s 2-1 loss to FC Astana in the Europa League group stages. Although the game was virtually meaningless, Solskjaer used it to his advantage and has shown that he has faith in United’s youth many other times.
Other Right-Backs
Although Manchester United only have two right-backs, they are both top quality.
The Red Devils signed Aaron Wan-Bissaka last summer, and he has turned out extremely successfully. Costing United £45 million, plus £5 million in add-ons, the Englishman looks a bargain now. He is arguably the best right-back in the league, with his attacking game the only weakness. Defensively, he is incredible and is one of the best tacklers in the world.
Diogo Dalot is also a very good, and promising, backup. The Portuguese is only 21-years-old and has the ability to play in a more attacking role as well. One of the most exciting talents currently at United, Dalot could be a star of the future there, and another signing at right-back may hinder his progress.
Why the Deal Might go Through
This deal might go through anyway, with the Red Devils having lost third-choice right-back, Ashley Young, in January. The Englishman brought the experience to the side, and Meunier could come in with a similar job, although he highly rated, and would be much more expensive wage-wise.
Furthermore, with Diogo Dalot considering a move to some of United’s Premier League rivals in the summer, they may need a new right-back, and Meunier is a very good candidate.
