Chelsea want to sign striker Luca Waldschmidt from Freiburg according to Alan Nixon at The Sun.
The 23-year-old’s form captured the attention of Blues boss Frank Lampard who hopes to move for the German this summer.
Chelsea Chasing Luca Waldschmidt
Highly-Rated
Waldschmidt scored five goals in 15 Bundesliga appearances for Freiburg this season and made two asssits.
He scored 15 goals in 48 appearances overall for the Bundesliga club since his transfer from Hamburg in 2018.
The 23-year old has not been a regular for Freiburg this season, though. He made six appearances from the bench and missed nine games through injury.
However, it was the striker’s performance at the U21 Championship in 2019 which highlighted his potential.
Waldschmidt scored seven goals in four appearances for Germany at the tournament and won the Golden Boot.
He then earnt a senior international call up in October 2019 and is nicknamed ‘Il Bomber’ in reference to German goal-scoring legend Gerd Muller.
High Price?
Waldschmidt would be available for around £20 million. It is likely that he will provide competition for Tammy Abraham, who scored 13 goals in 25 games for the Blues before the season suspended in March.
It would be a low-cost move for Lampard and presents a cheaper option compared to other reported targets.
However, the striker’s talent may spark interest from other clubs to compete with Chelsea for the signature of the 23-year-old.
Lampard’s Attacking Focus
Frank Lampard appears to be focussing on bringing in attacking reinforcements this summer.
A number of Blues’ players may be departing the club this summer which would leave space for Lampard to move for the German prospect.
Michy Batshuayi seems to be surplus to requirements at the club after failing to impress since moving from Marseille in 2016.
Fellow striker Olivier Giroud enters the final months of his contract and could leave Stamford Bridge in the summer.
