Championship strugglers Middlesbrough have appointed Neil Warnock as their new manager. Jonathan Woodgate will leave the role with immediate effect and be replaced by the former Cardiff City boss, who will oversee the remaining fixtures.

A Poor Season
Boro were in the Premier League as recently as 2017 but have found life back in the Championship difficult, particularly in this campaign under former player Woodgate. They sit outside the relegation zone on just goal difference.
In a statement, the club said: “MFC can confirm that head coach Jonathan Woodgate has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.
“Jonathan was relieved of his role on Tuesday morning and will be replaced by the experienced Neil Warnock.
“Warnock will assume responsibility immediately.
“The club would like to place on record its thanks to Jonathan for all his work in the role of head coach.”
Their first game back after the three-month break was a heavy 3-0 defeat to Swansea City. Rhian Brewster, on loan from Liverpool, scored twice in the first half as the Swans ran riot and left Middlesbrough in their precarious position.
With eight games remaining to save their season, even for a manager of Warnock’s experience, this is a tough ask. There are eight teams still in direct trouble of relegation in the Championship, with Luton Town and Barnsley looking in particular trouble.
Taking Over Immediately
Warnock’s tenure will start straight away and Teesside Live reporters Phillip Tallentire and Dominic Shaw say that the ex-Sheffield United boss will take training today in preparation for Boro’s massive relegation six-pointer with Stoke City this weekend.
A win for Boro would take them above the Potters in the table, while a win for Stoke would certainly ease their problems and put them to within two points of mid-table.
