African Cup of Nations Postponed Until January 2022

African Cup of Nations

After months of uncertainty, a decision to postpone the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) to January 2022 has been made. The tournament was originally planned to go ahead in January of 2021 but due to COVID-19, was forced to be postponed by a year.

African Cup of Nations Postponed By a year

A Major Boost for Liverpool

After winning the Premier League title for the first time this season, Liverpool will be keen to continue their dominance next season, especially after the news of AFCON postponement. Before the decision was made, Liverpool were set to be without Mohamed Salah, Naby Keita and Sadio Mane for at least a month next season.

And, with Liverpool reportedly set to endure a fairly quiet transfer window, fans were worried. Without Mane and Salah for at least a month and no incoming replacements, Liverpool’s title defence was set to be a challenge, to say the least.

Now the decision to postpone has been made, however, Liverpool will have all the firepower necessary to propel them towards two consecutive titles. The postponement, too, justifies Liverpool’s transfer stance on the likes of Timo Werner and Kai Havertz. With Salah and Mane at their disposal, spending £50 million on other forwards during a pandemic simply isn’t worth it.

2022 – A Big Year for Football

Now that AFCON has been moved by a year, 2022 is set to be an incredible year of football. It is set to start with AFCON in January in the middle of the usual football season before the World Cup takes place in Qatar later in the year. The tournament will certainly be worth the wait, too, as we see the likes of Riyad Mahrez collide with Salah and Wilfred Zaha in what will be a true festival of football. 2022, itself, is looking like the year of the beautiful game.
