Cheltenham Town have completed the signing of Andy Williams. The striker arrives on a one-year deal from Northampton Town, the team who beat Cheltenham in the League Two play-offs this season. The Cobblers went on to earn promotion to League One by beating Exeter City in the final, but Williams will be staying in the fourth division after signing for the Robins for an undisclosed fee.

Back in the South West
Much of Williams’ career has been spent in the South West of England. He started out with Hereford United, having been born in the town, before joining Bristol Rovers and then having a more prolific period with Yeovil Town.
Williams then signed for Swindon Town, where he scored 31 times in 89 league games, before venturing north to sign for Doncaster Rovers. He scored 23 goals for the Yorkshire side in three seasons, and this included his first career hat-trick which came in a 4-1 win against former club Yeovil.
Following his release from the club, he signed for Northampton in 2018 and quickly became one of their go-to forwards. In total for the Cobblers, he scored 20 league goals in 71 games and was a key player in securing their place back in League One.
What Was Said?
Despite earning promotion with Northampton, Williams was keen to return to the area where he has spent a lot of his career and where he still lives.
Speaking to the club website about his transfer, Williams said: “It’s something that I’ve thought about for a while. I live quite close to here and after playing against Cheltenham a lot in the last few years it’s always been a tough test.
“I like the style of play and the manager had some great ideas. It’s an exciting time to come and join the club.”
