Summer Signings a-Plenty

Knoche becomes the latest addition to an ever-growing Union squad. The defender joins just one day after Die Eisernen announced goalkeeper Andreas Luthe, who joined the club from FC Augsburg.

After releasing eight players in the summer, Union have been busy bringing in new faces. In addition to Luthe, defenders Nico Schlotterbeck and Niko Giesselmann also joined. Midfielders Sebastian Griesbeck and Keita Endo, along with striker Cedric Teuchert make up the rest of the incoming’s so far.

Career So Far

Having featured ten times in the German Under-21 squad, Knoche has spent his entire career at Wolfsburg. He joined the club as a 13-year-old in 2005 and won the German Youth Championship six years later.

He turned out 183 times in the Bundesliga and achieved 226 appearances in all competitions for Die Wölfe. In addition to a DFB-Pokal and DFL-Supercup win, the defender has featured in the Champions League and Europa League for the Bundesliga outfit.

What Was Said

Speaking to the clubs’ official website, Knoche said: “When you have played for a club for 15 years, a change is probably not easy for any player. Nevertheless, I’m happy to be playing for 1. FC Union Berlin now.

“The club has developed very well and many football fans have been surprised and enthusiastic about it over the past year. The discussions with the people in charge were extremely positive, and that was the decisive factor in my decision to join Union.”

Oliver Ruhnert, Director of Professional Football at 1. FC Union Berlin, added: “With Robin Knoche, we have been able to sign a very good central defender who has enormous experience in the Bundesliga.

“With his excellent positional play, his height and his strong build-up play, Robin will not only strengthen our defence but also make us more flexible in terms of our play.”
