After winning the FA Cup in his first few months in charge, Mikel Arteta will now look towards shaping a squad capable of Champions League qualification. According to David Ornstein (via The Ornstein & Chapman Podcast), however, that squad moulded for success could be without Alexandre Lacazette.
Ornstein stated via the podcast: “There is an element of interest in Alexandre Lacazette at Arsenal, who Arsenal would be willing to do a deal for the right price or in a swap.”
Alexandre Lacazette Departing Arsenal is Still a Possibility
Swap Deal on the Cards?
Before the end of the season, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s exit was looking increasingly likely as contract talks dragged on. Fast forward a couple of weeks, though, and all that is left to do is the announcement, with the contract reportedly signed. The news would have come as a relief for Arsenal fans. Their club captain, top goalscorer and most influential player is set to stay.
But, as one departure is prevented, another could be on the horizon. If Ornstein’s words ring true, then Lacazette could find himself out the exit door of the Emirates this summer. The 29-year-old Frenchman could be used in deals to further advance Arteta’s Arsenal plans. With Arsenal reportedly interested in Thomas Partey, Lacazette could be used as a bargaining chip to make a deal for the defensive midfielder this summer.
Making Room for Youngsters
With Gabriel Martinelli’s development advancing with every minute on the pitch, Arsenal may feel now is the time to make room for the young Brazilian. As a result, it means there is a potential exit for at least one forward this summer. As Lacazette approaches 30, the Gunners may feel as though now is the last chance to receive a substantial fee for the Frenchman.
Either way, it will be interesting to see if Lacazette is still wearing the famous Arsenal colours come the start of the season.
