Newly-promoted Wycombe Wanderers have completed the permanent signing of defender Jason McCarthy from Millwall. He joins the Chairboys on an undisclosed fee.
The 24-year-old has returned to Adams Park for a fourth spell with the Chairboys and has agreed to a three-year contract.
Wycombe Wanderers Sign Jason McCarthy
A Familiar Face at Adams Park
McCarthy began his professional career with hometown club Southampton. He made one appearance for the Saints in the Premier League.
Ten months later, he joined Wycombe for his first loan spell away from the South Coast. McCarthy made 35 appearances for the Chairboys in League Two and collected the Supporters’ Player of the Year award at the end of the 2015/16 season for his efforts.
After a season on loan at Walsall and a year with Barnsley following a permanent switch there in 2017, McCarthy rejoined Gareth Ainsworth’s side in August 2018, and won the Supporters’ Player of the Year gong for a second time.
The English defender’s impressive form for the Chairboys earned him a move to Millwall last summer. However, he made just two league appearances for the Lions before heading back on loan to Wycombe in January, and featured nine times before the season was suspended due to COVID-19.
McCarthy did not feature in the League One play-offs last term as his loan deal was not able to be extended.
He becomes Wanderers’ third signing of the summer after Uche Ikpeazu and Giles Phillips, with further additions expected as the club aim to avoid relegation from the Championship.
What Was Said?
Speaking to the club’s official website, Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth revealed his delight after bringing McCarthy back to Buckinghamshire.
He said: “Jason is an outstanding professional, on and off the pitch, and is a perfect fit for Wycombe Wanderers which is why we’ve brought him back here a number of times now.
“Ever since he was a young lad at Southampton, we spotted great potential in him and he’s lived up to that every time he’s pulled on the shirt.
“He can play in a number of positions which will be invaluable for us with so many games coming thick and fast in the Championship, and he’s an extremely popular member of the changing room.”
