Following last night’s game between Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain, in which Neymar accused Alvaro Gonzalez of making a racist remark, the French champions have released a statement in support of Neymar.
The alleged incident originally arose following an outbreak of pushing and shoving in the last minute of the game. The several altercations which occurred led to an incredible total of five red cards with one of those handed to Neymar after a VAR check saw him hit out at Gonzalez.
The Brazilian has since alleged, however, that the physical reaction was a result of a racist remark aimed towards him.
PSG Release Statement in Support of Neymar
Statement
The previously mentioned statement read:
“Paris Saint-Germain strongly supports Neymar Jr. who reported being subjected to racist abuse by an opposing player.
“The Club restates that there is no place for racism in society, in football or in our lives and calls on everyone to speak out against all forms of racism throughout the world.
“For more than 15 years the Club has been strongly committed to the fight against all forms of discrimination alongside its partners SOS Racisme, Licra and Sportitude.
Paris Saint-Germain looks forward to the LFP’s Disciplinary Commission to investigate and ascertain the facts, and the Club remains at the LFP’s disposal for any assistance required.”
Neymar’s Statement
Neymar himself also released a statement via his Instagram following the incident. The job will now be for the Ligue 1 to investigate the situation in full, before coming to a conclusion. If Gonzalez is found to have made the comments, then a severe punishment is expected to follow.
The alleged incident could be a huge step back, after so many steps forward, in putting an end to racism and discrimination of any kind in and out of the sporting world.
