Everton are targeting a loan deal for Barcelona defender Jean-Clair Todibo, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Toffees had initially been targeting a deal for Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori, but the Blues would now prefer him to remain at Stamford Bridge.
Everton Target Loan for Jean-Clair Todibo
Attracting Interest
The 20-year-old defender is attracting interest from several clubs, including the Toffees.
Todibo, who joined Barcelona in January 2019, is also attracting interest from French club Rennes, according to the Daily Mail. However, according to French publication RMC Sport, newly-promoted Fulham are also in the race for his signature.
As a result, Everton will have to act quickly to secure his signature. The highly-rated defender spent the second half of last season on loan with Schalke, making eight appearances.
The Frenchman has made just five appearances at the Nou Camp since joining the Catalan giants in 2019. Despite still being young, he has fallen down the pecking order some way. Due to their ongoing issues on and off the pitch, he may not get the chance he desires at Barcelona for some time.
Why Are Everton Looking for Defensive Reinforcements?
Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti currently has just two available central defenders. Michael Keane and Yerry Mina have started both of the Toffees’ Premier League fixtures so far.
However, Mina missed their trip to Fleetwood Town in the EFL Cup last night, meaning that left-back Lucas Digne had to fill in at the heart of defence.
The Italian boss is also without Mason Holgate and Jarrad Branthwaite, who are both sidelined through injury.
As a result, Ancelotti is keen to add another centre-back to his squad. Everton’s first preference was Tomori, but Chelsea have changed their stance in loaning him out, meaning the Toffees have moved onto other targets.
Everton face Crystal Palace this weekend, as they look to continue their perfect start to the season.
