Tottenham Hotspur are still pursuing Swansea City’s Joe Rodon, with The Athletic claiming that “a deal will be done.”

Tottenham Hotspur Continue Discussions With Joe Rodon

Spurs Still to Agree on a Deal for Joe Rodon

The Athletic’s stance on Rodon to Spurs is that;

“[a] deal will be done. The clubs are a long way apart in their valuation but there is a belief that a deal can be agreed, with Rodon himself naturally very interested in stepping up to a club of Spurs’ standing.”

A further sticking point is whether Swansea can get their own transfer business settled, as they;

 “[w]ant to bring in an additional two centre-backs before selling Rodon, which is partly why any deal for the defender is expected to drag on this week towards Friday’s domestic transfer deadline.”

“Should the transfer be completed, it will be for a few million more than the £7 million that Spurs initially had in mind, with add-ons potentially thrown in to help bridge the gap in the two club’s valuations.”

Potential Rivals

The Athletic have also highlighted the other clubs interested in the player;

“Of their possible rivals, however, West Ham have been put off by Swansea’s asking price and it’s unclear if Leicester will make a move so soon after spending more than £30 million on another young centre-back, Wesley Fofana. “

Rodon’s Qualities

Spurs currently have Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier and Japhet Tanganga as their centre-backs; one more defender would help to bolster squad depth.

Rodon would help to provide this, as well as cover for the future. The 22-year-old is calm on the ball and a big presence in the air at 6ft 4in.

The player is already known for his ability to carry the ball forward out of the defence; he would seemingly fit into the Spurs philosophy of ball-playing defenders and attractive football.

He was born in Llangyfelach, Swansea and graduated from Swansea City’s academy four years ago. Since then, he has made 52 appearances for the Swans. In addition, he has gone out on loan to Cheltenham Town, where he played 18 matches from January 2018.

At Cheltenham, he struggled to make his mark, starting only seven of those matches.

However, the Welshman has impressed at Swansea, making 21 appearances last season, and has played every minute of every league match this season.

Rodon would be excellent business for Spurs in what would be a strong transfer window for the club.
