Doncaster Rovers have announced the signing of Matt Smith on a season-long loan from Manchester City.

Smith is Doncaster’s second signing of deadline day, following the addition of Josh Sims, also on loan.

The Welshman will wear the number 14 shirt at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Experience So Far

The 20-year-old arrives at Doncaster Rovers as a senior Wales international and with some Championship experience to his name. This could be a real coup for Darren Moore’s Doncaster side.

That said, his Championship experience didn’t amount to too much. But he is clearly a player that possesses some potential.

Smith spent the first half of last season at Queens Park Rangers, where he made ten appearances, assisting the one goal and only twice making the starting line-up.

He then joined Charlton Athletic in the winter window, making just two substitute appearances for the club before the coronavirus pandemic interrupted the season.

Before that, he had a spell in Belgium with FC Twente, where he made 37 appearances, scoring twice and assisting twice too.

Smith has had a wealth of involvement in the development teams at Manchester City.

Ryan Giggs saw enough to give Smith his Wales debut in 2018 and he has since picked up 11 caps, starting six games for his country.

Looking to Be Part of Darren Moore’s Doncaster Rovers Project

Matt Smith told the club website: “It’s a great opportunity to come here and play. The gaffer (Darren Moore) is one of the main reasons I wanted to come and play for this club.

“I’m so excited and over the moon to finally get playing again, the manager’s creating a project here and it’s something I want to be a part of.

“I think it’s a great opportunity to come and play. Even being here for 15 minutes there’s a great feel around the place and I’m delighted to be here.”

Smith is the sixth loan signing of the summer transfer window for Doncaster Rovers.
