Sims’ Southampton Struggle
Despite having been with Southampton throughout his youth career, he has struggled to hit the ground running in the first team. Sims has made 27 appearances for the senior side, contributing to three assists.
Still, at the age of 23, he remains involved in their U23 side when he isn’t away on loan. The winger has scored three goals in four appearances in the development league this season. It’s probable that has also been used as a platform to keep him fit ahead of this move.
In 2018/19, Sims joined Championship side Reading on loan. He made 18 appearances during his time at the club, providing three assists in the process.
Following his stint at the Madejski Stadium, he made the move across the pond, joining Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls in a second temporary spell away from the Saints.
In America, Sims made ten appearances, scoring one goal and assisting another.
Sims has also represented England at U17, U18 & U20 level.
Darren Moore: A Shrewd Operator
Manager Darren Moore has obviously seen something in Sims that has made him want to sign him on a short-term loan. During his time at Doncaster Rovers, Moore has become a shrewd operator in the transfer market. Sims will surely be looking to add more goals and assists to his game in League One.
Doncaster Rovers’ Style of Play Ideal
In an interview for the club website, Josh Sims said: “I’m delighted now it’s all gone through, it’s something that I’ve been looking forward to and the way Doncaster play is ideal for me.
“I spoke with the manager and he explained to me what he wants, I’ve heard good things about the club so I’m happy that it’s fallen into place quite quickly.
“I’ve had a look at the squad and the other players they’ve brought in are impressive, I’m looking to play regular football now and take advantage of the opportunity.”
Sims is Doncaster’s fifth loan addition of the summer transfer window.
