Deadline Day Deal Broke Down in Final Hours

The Everton winger was being monitored by a number clubs ahead of Friday’s EFL transfer deadline and as the deadline approached it seemed as if Middlesbrough would win the race for his signature.

However, with just hours remaining, problems emerged that Boro “couldn’t overcome”, according to Warnock.

Bolasie spent last season on loan at Sporting Lisbon where he made 25 appearances, scoring twice.

Warnock told the media that he was confident that a deal for the 31-year-old would be completed. Yet, issues arose in the final hours that caused the move to stall.

When questioned over what the cause of the delay was, the Boro boss said: “Many things really. I’m disappointed we didn’t get him. That’s life.

“Numerous things happened in the afternoon, it wasn’t to be. Yes, I’m disappointed but we move on.

“I thought we had him most of the day but problems cropped up and we couldn’t get it over the line, it was too late.”

The former Sheffield United and Cardiff City boss also hinted at unknown details about the Democratic Republic of Congo international, adding: “He was disappointed but he was partly to blame. There was things I should have known before 4 o’clock about his problems at Everton and they were problems we couldn’t overcome.

“We tried to and eventually we did but it was too late.

“I’ve asked him why I didn’t know about this beforehand and he said he told his agent. I said why didn’t the agent tell us, he was talking to Neil (Bausor) quite a lot.”

Bolasie will now remain at Everton, a club that he’s not played for since the 2017/18 Premier League season.
