On Sunday, the Sir Tom Finney Stadium, home of Bamber Bridge Football Club played host to the Women’s Championship as Blackburn Rovers Ladies welcomed the London City Lionesses to the North West.
After a sluggish start from Blackburn, with the visitors having plenty of joy, the hosts went ahead on 30 minutes. After the home side’s best spell of the match, including a disallowed goal for offside, Saffron Jordan was bought down for a penalty. Walters confidently stepped up and fired the ball low and hard to give the home side the lead.

As the game wore on, the Lionesses stepped up their pressure as they went in search of an equaliser. The Londoners made two changes at half time, introducing Annie Rossiter and Freda Ayisi who both made an instant impact.
Rossiter, in particular, had plenty of joy down the right-hand side, getting in behind the defence on numerous occasions and causing plenty of problems for the hosts. The 19-year-old winger created two guilt edge chances in quick succession as she got to the byeline to cross, albeit both were squandered.
Ultimately, Blackburn were left somewhat hanging on for the clean sheet and with it the all-important 1-0 victory, as they switched places in the table with their visitors.
Stand Out Performers
For the hosts, Jade Richards was undoubtedly the player of the match. The central defender was dominant in the air in both boxes and commanded each situation with calmness. Much of the credit for the clean sheet can go to her.
There were a few standouts for the London club, who may consider themselves unlucky to be travelling home without anything to show for their trip. Both Grace Neville and the aforementioned Rossiter were particularly impressive despite an ultimately fruitless afternoon.
