Ipswich Boss Paul Lambert Tests Positive as Blues Suffer Coronavirus Crisis

Six Positive Cases in Playing and Coaching Staff

Paul Lambert is one of six individuals within Ipswich Town’s playing and coaching staff to return positive cases of coronavirus, the club has confirmed.

The results, returned to players and staff today, came following a round of testing made before training on Friday morning after one player reported symptoms.

The Blues’ League One fixture with Peterborough United, scheduled for Saturday (December 12) was postponed following a positive test in the Posh ranks.

Ipswich have made the EFL aware of their positive cases of coronavirus – throwing their fixtures against Northampton Town and AFC Wimbledon respectively into doubt.

Lee O’Neill, general manager of football operations, said: “We will be closing the training ground for now in line with guidelines until we have spoken in detail with the EFL about the way forward.”

The Blues have strictly followed EFL guidance but have been tested sporadically in the opening months of the season.

Measures taken to restrict outbreaks have included closing the main building at their Playford Road training base in Suffolk, as well as arriving already changed for training.

Players have also been instructed to return home straight away after sessions finished.

The Blues have been relatively fortunate so far this season, only having limited contact with the virus.

Ipswich striker Kayden Jackson tested positive for coronavirus earlier this season, while Luke Woolfenden had to self-isolate after a close contact tested positive.

Coach Matt Gill also tested positive for the virus earlier this season, meaning Lambert had to miss the 1-0 win at Gillingham – although the Blues boss eventually tested negative.
