REPORT: Chelsea Prioritise Record-Breaking Erling Haaland Deal Next Summer

Although Chelsea spent north of £200 million on signings last season, it seems Frank Lampard and the board want more. According to Angelo Mangiante of Sky Sports, Chelsea are prioritising a move for Borussia Dortmund sensation Erling Haaland, in a move that would surely break their transfer record once again.

Chelsea Prioritise Erling Haaland Deal Next Summer

Recent Golden Boy Winner

Last month, Haaland won the 2020 Golden Boy award, given to the best-performing player under 23. Competing with several established superstars such as Kylian Mbappe and Joao Felix, the Norwegian claimed the award after a very impressive year.

Haaland is a goalscorer, plain and simple. In 54 games since the beginning of last season, he has 61 goals. For a 20-year-old, that is an astonishing figure. In fact, he’s been scoring since before then too, ever since he made his professional debut.

He is one of the best strikers in the world at the moment, undoubtedly a generational talent, and very likely a future Balon d’Or winner. If Chelsea can sign Erling Haaland, they would have their frontline secure for years to come.

Potential Selection Headache for Chelsea

If this sensational move does go through, then Chelsea would have arguably the best attack in world football. Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, who will undoubtedly catch fire at some point after a slow start, are already at the club. Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech seem to have locked down the wings, with Callum Hudson-Odoi just behind them in the pecking order.

Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud are also options up top, which makes up a very talented attack. Add to that a player like Haaland? That’s a frontline capable of winning the Blues titles for a decade. However, it would not come without its issues.

At the moment, Werner is undoubtedly the key piece at striker looking forward, with Abraham as the backup. But Haaland wouldn’t be joining to be on the bench, so it would likely mean Abraham leaves his boyhood team. Most Chelsea fans would gladly take that trade, though.

The move could also limit Werner’s playing time unless Lampard decides to play a front two, in which case Pulisic, Ziyech or Havertz could be affected.

While a move will certainly be tricky, and Chelsea are by no means close to any sort of agreement, the sight of Erling Haaland linking up with the current attacking options already at the club is worth breaking the bank for. Hopefully, for Chelsea fans, owner Roman Abramovich comes through one more time.
