As one of the biggest football clubs in the world, there are always plenty of transfer rumours surrounding Manchester United. After a relatively quiet summer transfer window, fans will be hoping that the Red Devils can pull off a big move in the near future, whether it be in the coming month, or at the end of the 2020/21 season. Regardless, there is no doubt that the club will be the subject of many rumours this January, as we take a look at the players who Manchester United could sign in the upcoming transfer window.
Who Manchester United Could Sign in January
Jadon Sancho
A problem in the Manchester United starting team for some time, the Red Devils are still without a recognized right-winger in their senior squad.
Mason Greenwood has been the most successful player to fill in of late, but the youngster’s best position is in the centre of the attack, and playing him out wide wastes some of his talent.
Daniel James has spent some time on the right-wing, but is more suited to playing on the left, while Juan Mata has also been deployed there occasionally.
Ultimately, none of these players have matched the influence that a seasoned right-winger could have on United’s team.
Jadon Sancho, however, could provide the perfect acquisition.
Despite his rough start to the 2020/21 season, the Englishman has shown that he is a top player time and time again while playing for Borussia Dortmund.
There were a plethora of rumours linking the attacker to an Old Trafford switch last summer, but it never materialised after his German team stayed firm to their valuation.
He remains high on United’s priority list, and a move to Manchester for him either in January or the summer window is still on the cards. The latter is probably more likely, though.
Dayot Upamecano
Central defence is another issue for United’s starting team.
They signed Harry Maguire in the summer of 2019 for a record-breaking £80 million, and he has been good since his arrival, becoming the captain when Ashley Young left the club last January. Despite this, he has been prone to occasional mistakes, and is not the perfect centre-back, being rather slow and not particularly agile.
Victor Lindelof tends to start alongside the Englishman, and, while it has proven a solid partnership, the ideal player to appear alongside Maguire would be much faster. Further to this, with the Swedish international currently out with a back injury, United may be called into action in January to sign a replacement earlier than they may have planned.
Dayot Upamecano has been heavily linked with the Manchester side and could be an excellent signing. The Frenchman is a top-quality centre-back, with the pace needed to bring out the best in Maguire. He is also very capable of bringing the ball out from the back, like the former Leicester City defender, and the two could form a formidable partnership.
