Mikel Arteta Provides Update on Gabriel Martinelli Injury Situation

Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli appears to have suffered another injury setback as he was unable to play in the Gunners’ FA Cup third round fixture against Newcastle United. The forward was set to make an appearance in Mikel Arteta’s starting 11 but he sustained an ankle injury during the pre-match warmups. Martinelli was due to make his fifth appearance of the 2020/21 season after returning in December from a knee injury that kept him out for six months.

Arteta Provides Injury Update on Gabriel Martinelli

Arteta Provides Initial Reaction to Injury

Following Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle, Arteta spoke to the media about Martinelli’s injury in the post-match press conference.

According to the club’s official website, he stated: “I went to the medical room and he was in tears. He was in a lot of pain and we’re going to have to see how he is. It didn’t look good. He was in pain so I imagine that we’re not going to have good news with him.”

The Arsenal manager is not optimistic about the outcome of this injury. Arteta did mention Martinelli should be undergoing a scan on Sunday to get a clearer picture of the severity of the injury.

Another Setback

It’s been a difficult six months for Martinelli. He began his time with Arsenal in decent form as he registered ten goals and four assists in 26 appearances in all competitions during the 2019/20 campaign. However, he would not finish the season with the Gunnars as he sustained a knee injury during a training session in June, which caused him to miss the remainder of the 2019/20 season.

Martinelli recently returned to action for Arsenal in December. He made four appearances during the final month of 2020 and registered an assist in a 4-1 loss to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup quarter-final. Against Chelsea, he recorded four shots, two of which were on target, in the massive 3-1 victory for the Gunners. After these strong performances for Arsenal, Martinelli could be looking at more time off the pitch in the weeks to come.
