Oxford United’s Winning Run is Breaking Records

Oxford United’s recent winning run extended to nine games in all competitions with a 3-1 victory over AFC Wimbledon in the Football League Trophy.

The run is not only the second-best in England and fourth-best in Europe, but it is also a new club record, having overtaken the previous one which was set back in 1982/83 under the late Jim Smith.

Fourth Best Winning Run in Europe

Manchester City are currently leading the way with consecutive wins after they made it to 13 with a 2-0 win at Burnley on Wednesday evening.

As a result, the U’s have the second-best run in England with nine victories, but there are two other sides in Europe also in double figures. NK Radomlje of the Slovenian second tier have 11 successive wins while Montenegro outfit Buducnost Podgorica have recorded ten.

Swedish side Halmstads BK, who were formerly managed by Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson, are also on a nine-game winning run.

Unbeaten Run

And it isn’t just a nine-game winning streak that has been impressive for Oxford. The U’s are currently unbeaten in 13 games in all competitions – a run stretching back to December.

Since a disappointing derby defeat to Swindon Town in the last week of November, Karl Robinson’s side have defied the odds and have moved to within three points of the playoffs rather than being dragged into a relegation battle, which was looking likely.

Oxford’s record for an unbeaten run was set back in the club’s Conference years. Again, it was set by Jim Smith after the former manager returned to the club, leading the U’s to 19 games without defeat.

However, Robinson came close last season. The U’s went 18 games unbeaten in all competitions before defeat against his former club MK Dons in December.

Oxford United Squad Depth

To keep a run going, clubs need a strong squad depth. Oxford already had a strong squad but the acquisitions they made in the January transfer window have helped towards that.

Central defender Luke McNally arrived from Irish top-flight side St Patrick’s Athletic but is seen as one for the future. However, the U’s added Joe Grayson, Elliot Lee and Brandon Barker on deadline day.

The new arrivals will certainly add further competition to an already exciting and talented squad as the U’s look to continue their promotion push.
