The Likely Candidates to Replace Jason Tindall at Bournemouth

After a long period of stability for Bournemouth, Eddie Howe left his position as Bournemouth manager after nearly a decade in charge of the club. The Cherries looked to try and maintain the same philosophy at the club and avoid any hangover from the loss of their manager by appointing Howe’s deputy Jason Tindall as Bournemouth looked to return to the top flight at the first time of asking.

Despite a bright start, Bournemouth’s form began to deteriorate and one of the favourites for automatic promotion began to struggle in the league.

This led to long time coach Jason Tindall being sacked, leaving the Bournemouth owner actively searching for a new manager to steady the ship and return the club into the promised land of the Premier League.

As it stands former Middlesbrough manager Jonathan Woodgate has been in charge of the club, having been handed the post on an interim basis. He has begun brightly with two victories and one draw from his first three games.

Likely Candidates to Replace Jason Tindall at Bournemouth

David Wagner

Former Huddersfield Town manager David Wagner has declared an interest in the Bournemouth job following the sacking of Jason Tindall. The German often looked up to Jurgen Klopp as a young coach and learnt a great deal from him during his time at Borussia Dortmund. Wagner followed in the footsteps of Klopp and stepped into management in England when he joined the Terriers in 2015.

Despite being seen as potential relegation strugglers at the start of the 2016/17 season, Wagner was able to mastermind promotion to the Premier League with the Terriers with an emphasis on possession-based attacking football. Huddersfield were promoted via the playoffs with a penalty shoot-out victory over Reading.

Huddersfield followed that up with an excellent first season in the top flight, finishing 16th despite having one of the lowest budgets in the division. The following season in the Premier League proved a step too far for the German manager and, after a dismal start to the season, Wagner announced his resignation in January 2019 with the Terriers rooted to the bottom of the table.

Wagner returned to Germany in 2019 to join Bundesliga outfit Schalke. However, he endured a torrid period at the club, winning just 12 of his 40 games in charge. He was sacked just two games into the new season following an 18 game winless run.

Wagner has strong Championship experience and could be a very viable option for the Cherries if they are to return to the top flight. His philosophy is also to play attractive possession-based football, which the owners of the club have bought into in the last few seasons. However, there is an air of scepticism surrounding his appointment after difficult results in management over the last few seasons.

John Terry

Another name that has been linked with the job is former Chelsea captain John Terry. In his playing career, he had achieved everything there was to win in the game at club level. He lifted the Premier League title on five occasions, six FA Cups, three League Cups, one Champions League and one Europa League. He also captained the England national team and picked up 78 caps for his country.

Throughout his career, he has established himself as a natural leader for both club and country and it was always expected that he would go into management once his playing days were over. As of yet, he has no managerial experience but he has gained a great deal of experience at Aston Villa and has been Dean Smith’s assistant manager. During this time, the club have enjoyed a great deal of success, winning promotion from the Championship in his first season, surviving relegation in his second season and now, during his third season as coach, Villa are in eighth position.

It seems Terry’s defensive instincts have translated well on to the players as Aston Villa have so far kept nine clean sheets and also have the second-best defensive record in the Premier League.

John Terry seems a promising coach and has great playing credentials. As of yet though, he remains inexperienced in management and it seems unlikely he will become the new Bournemouth manager at this moment in time.

Jonathan Woodgate

As a player, Jonathan Woodgate was an extremely talented defender who represented the likes of Leeds United, Newcastle United and Real Madrid. He would later go on to have two spells with his local club Middlesbrough and also a spell at Tottenham where he scored the winning goal in the League Cup final against Chelsea.

As a player, he was seen as a future England regular during his time at Leeds but his career was largely hampered by a series of long-term injuries. Following his retirement from football, he worked as a coach at Middlesbrough harnessing academy talent before making the step up to assistant manager under the experienced Tony Pulis.

Many fans at Middlesbrough had become inpatient with Pulis’s style of football and results were not good enough for the Teeside side to make the Premier League. Ultimately, all of Pulis’s backroom staff bar Woodgate were replaced as Middlesbrough were keen to make a fresh start under the management of their former defender.

His first season in management was a big struggle and Middlesbrough spent most of the year hovering just above the relegation places during Woodgate’s time at the club. Late in the season, Woodgate was relieved of his duties and he left the club with just nine wins from 41 games in charge. Leaving with a 21 per cent win record.

Following the departure of Jason Tindall from Bournemouth, Woodgate has since been appointed to steady the ship on a short term basis and so far he has enjoyed a steady start to life on the south coast and The Cherries are unbeaten in his first three games in charge. Whether he becomes a permanent member of the coaching staff remains to be seen but at this moment in time, it seems unlikely that he will get the full-time job.
