Oldham Athletic have appointed Keith Curle as the club’s new head coach following the dismissal of Harry Kewell on Sunday, March 7.

Curle has initially joined on a contract until the end of the season.

Keith Curle Appointed Oldham Athletic Head Coach

Years of Football League Experience

The 57-year-old has coached in the Football League for many years. Most recently, he was sacked by Northampton Town after two-and-a-half years with the club. Before that, Curle spent four years at Carlisle United following a stint at Notts County. His managerial career stretches back almost 20 years.

Despite being sacked by Northampton, Curle had overseen the club’s promotion from League Two via the play-offs in 2019/20.

Oldham Athletic sit 16th in the League Two table, ten points clear of the relegation zone.

Short-Term Contract No Surprise Considering Oldham’s Managerial History

Curle’s short-term deal with the club is befitting of the shelf-life of a manager at the club in recent years. There have been 12 different managers at the club since February 2015, when Lee Johnson left after almost two years. With a couple of them holding the post twice too.

The former Northampton boss has the opportunity to earn a longer stay with the club but with historical evidence, nothing is certain.

Straight On

Curle will be in charge for the club’s game against Port Vale at Vale Park on Tuesday, March 9. Paul Butler, who has been helping out at the club in recent times, has returned as Curle’s assistant. Butler has recently worked with Alan Pardew and Chris Powell at ADO Den Haag.

The club say Keith Curle will continue to work with the current first-team staff in place.

The new head coach will look to find some winning form as soon as possible, with the club on a run of just one win in their last six games.
