Crystal Palace have had varying amounts of success in the transfer market across the years. For every success, there have been absolute nightmares. There have also been academy players who just failed to make the grade. As a result, we have decided to look at five players who made just one appearance during their time at Selhurst Park.
Five Players Who Made Just One Appearance During Their Time With Crystal Palace
Cedric Carrasso
The now-retired Frenchman is best known for his eight-season spell with Bordeaux, but he did spend a season on loan at Selhurst Park.
However, it was not a successful move for the Frenchman. He made just one appearance as a substitute against Birmingham City late on in the season after Palace number one Matt Clarke suffered an eye injury during the first half. However, that proved to be his only appearance during his time in South London.
That appearance, though, will be remembered fondly by Carrasso. It was his senior debut as a professional, beginning a long career that was spent predominantly in France.
Elliot Grandin
After making their return to the Premier League in 2013, Palace made a host of signings in the summer as they looked to build a squad capable of staying in the top-flight.
One of those was Elliot Grandin, who lasted just six months at Selhurst Park. Having been reunited with Ian Holloway, who managed the Frenchman with former club Blackpool, neither lasted much longer with the Eagles. Holloway resigned after just eight games in the Premier League, while Grandin was released by the next incumbent of the Palace managerial hotseat, Tony Pulis.
Grandin’s only appearance came in a 2-1 away defeat to Bristol City in the EFL Cup. Following his stint with Palace, he returned to Blackpool before enjoying spells abroad with various clubs.
Ray Wilkins
Wilkins was respected as a player and as a manager before sadly passing away in 2018. His playing career saw him play for the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United, as well as abroad with AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.
The summer of 1994 saw Wilkins move to Selhurst Park as a player-coach. Injury in his one and only game for Palace hampered his time at Selhurst Park.
It was a spell that only lasted a few months, as he returned to Queens Park Rangers, from whom he joined Palace, as their player-manager.
Florian Marange
Marange is another player who joined during the fateful summer of 2013.
With Holloway seeking alternative options to Dean Moxey and with Norwegian Jonathan Parr injured, Palace secured the services of Marange on a one-year deal.
However, that one-year deal turned out to last only a matter of months, as he was released by the club in October 2013. His one and only game was against Bristol City in the EFL Cup, the same as team-mate Elliot Grandin.
Clearly, though, there was an element of bad blood between. Speaking to the Evening Standard after being left out of Palace’s 25-man squad, Marange said: “I’m disgusted.
“If I had known this rule, I would have a clause in my contract. But my advisor did not tell me and now I am told that it is almost my fault.”
Rhoys Wiggins
Wiggins began his career with Crystal Palace, but couldn’t land a permanent spot in the first-team.
The Uxbridge-born defender was the beneficiary of a knee injury to Clint Hill, as Neil Warnock had to turn to him as the only remaining left-back.
However, his debut against Nottingham Forest proved to be his only appearance in a Palace shirt, as he joined Bournemouth in the summer of 2010.
