Sergio Aguero Barcelona Move Edging Closer

Sergio Aguero Barcelona

Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero has reportedly agreed to join Barcelona. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Argentina striker has agreed on a contract until June 2023. The Sergio Aguero Barcelona move looks increasingly likely.

Aguero may soon be joined in Catalonia by Lyon forward Memphis Depay, who has long been linked with a move to the Nou Camp. The former Manchester United star has recently taken on a team of legal experts who will help him take control of the next steps in his club career, and is also closing in on a transfer to Barcelona.

Why the Move Makes Sense for Both Parties

On the face of it, Barcelona’s decision to move for Aguero comes across as a strange one. After all, this is the same club that decided to push a 33-year-old Luiz Suarez out of the door last summer, infuriating the likes of Lionel Messi in the process.

Meanwhile, Aguero is now aged 32, and is nearing the end of his least productive season in Manchester. A combination of injury issues and others being preferred in the forward positions by Pep Guardiola have limited the striker to just two goals in 11 Premier League appearances this campaign.

However, the form of Suarez this season for Atletico Madrid might have prompted a re-think from Barcelona. While the Catalans are out of the La Liga title race, the Uruguay striker has scored 20 league goals for his new club this season, firing Diego Siemone’s side to the cusp of a first Spanish title since 2014.

Now that Aguero has returned to full fitness, the hope is that he can provide a similarly impressive impact once he joins Ronald Koeman’s Barcelona side. Given that the club’s finances continue to be ravaged by the global health crisis, signing a player of Aguero’s calibre on a free transfer could prove an inspired piece of business.

Aguero May Convince Messi to Stay at Barcelona

One of the biggest questions on the lips of football fans around the world is whether Lionel Messi has played his final game at the Nou Camp for his boyhood club.

Messi’s 38 goals this season brings his Barcelona total to a staggering 672 since his senior debut in 2004, and the club remain desperate to convince him to stay.

Aguero is an international teammate of Messi’s, and the pair enjoy a close friendship that might help Barcelona convince the 33-year-old that his future remains in Spain.

If the duo are able to form the kind of relationship on the pitch that Messi enjoyed with Luiz Suarez, then the La Liga giants could return to their formidable standing in the European game sooner than expected.
