Barcelona Sign Emerson From Real Betis
Brazil International Arrives at Camp Nou
As per the agreement, the 22-year-old played on loan with the Seville based side to gain valuable experience. The Brazilian has signed from Atletico Mineiro via Real Betis for €9 million. Emerson is the latest of a long list of fellow countryman to have played full-back for the Catalan giants. Overall the club has signed six full-backs from Brazil, including Dani Alves, Juliano Belletti, Sylvinho and Adriano. He is the 43rd Brazilian to feature in Barcelona colours, with some distinguished names including Romario, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Rivaldo.
A Promising Future
During his time at Real Betis, the full-back matured with time. His confidence surged with every match and improved every facet of his game, from tacking, timing his offensive runs and tactical positioning. In total, Emerson played 79 games, scoring on five occasions. He provided 10 assists and was the most utilised player in all the squad. Thanks to his positive contributions, he helped his side to secure a Europa League place for next season. He has grown into a powerful, dependable and effective player and is ready for the rigours of the Camp Nou pressure.
Standing in his way is Sergino Dest. The American enjoyed a confident start to his Barcelona career, but his form dipped in line with his team. He remains the first-choice right-back, but the arrival of Emerson will give the department a fresh look and a healthy duel for next season.
From Attack to Defence
As a child growing up, Emerson’s position was in various attacking areas. As time went on, he would step back to a more defensive midfield role. In one game where his side needed a right-back, he filled in there and ever since has become his natural position.
In Emerson, Barcelona have a rough diamond who is maturing with each season. He will give healthy competition to Dest and is primed to make an impact at the top level. He is currently with the Brazil squad and awaits his first cap, so his evolution is on an upward trajectory.
