Thiago Silva Signs New Chelsea Contract

Thiago Silva

Thiago Silva has signed a new one-year contract at Chelsea, which will keep him at Stamford Bridge until June 2022.  The Brazil defender’s new deal was agreed in principle a number of weeks ago, meaning he would have stayed on at the club even if they were defeated in this season’s Champions League final.

Chelsea may still look to sign further defensive reinforcements this summer, despite the 36-year-old signing a new contract. The new European champions have defended with menace since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel in January, with the likes of German international Antonio Rudiger enjoying a resurgence under his compatriot’s management and alongside Silva in defence.

Brazilian’s Transfer Has Proved a Huge Success

Thiago Silva was brought to Chelsea as a free agent by previous manager Frank Lampard, having left Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the 2019/20 season.

Lampard was keen to add calmness and experience to his youthfully-assembled Chelsea side, and his successor Thomas Tuchel has benefitted from the Brazilian bringing both of those qualities in abundance.

Tuchel had previously managed the central defender during the pair’s time together in Paris, and will be delighted to see the club extend Silva’s stay in London by another year.

Last season, both player and manager fell short at the final hurdle in the Champions League, with PSG losing the Bayern Munich in the final; Silva’s last game for the club before moving to the Premier League. Going one step further a year later, this time with a new club, will be of added satisfaction to both men.

This season, Silva made 34 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions, helping the club to a top-four finish in the Premier League in addition to Champions League glory.

Thomas Tuchel Also Signs New Contract

Whilst carrying out his post-match media duties after beating Manchester City in the Champions League final, Chelsea boss Tuchel described the surreal experience of meeting club owner Roman Abramovich for the first time in the aftermath of victory on European club football’s biggest stage.

Tuchel was already five months into the 18-month contract he signed upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge, and a long-term extension to that deal has now been signed.

Tuchel told his post-match press conference: “I’m not even 100% sure, but maybe I [will] have a new contract now. It can be, my manager said something about it, but I do not know. So let’s check this first.

“I spoke to the owner right now on the pitch, this was the best moment for a first meeting. Or the worst, because from now on it can only get worse! We will speak tomorrow, speak later, speak tomorrow, and I am looking forward to this.”
