Inter Milan have opened talks to sign outgoing AC Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu, according to Sky Sport journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.
The Turkey international’s contract with the Rossoneri is coming to an end and he will not be extending his stay.
Inter Milan Reportedly Open Talks with Outgoing AC Milan Midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu
Hakan Calhanoglu: Potential Milan Switch
Hakan Calhanoglu’s future has been a topic of discussion for some time now. The 27-year-old was linked with Manchester United earlier in the 2020/21 season, though nothing has come of those reports. As cited by Fabrizio Romano, Calhanoglu was recently in talks with Atletico Madrid, however, they opted to sign Rodrigo de Paul instead.
Available on a free, Calhanoglu is an easy option for potential suitors, especially Inter. The Serie A champions recently saw Antonio Conte leave the club, despite leading them to the league title, his exit owed to the club’s desire to raise some cash through the sale of one or two of his players.
It makes sense that if Inter are out to do business that they’d look towards the value side of the market, Calhanoglu offers that.
Christian Eriksen Situation
Hakan Calhanoglu is being lined up as a necessary alternative to Christian Eriksen – who was recently discharged from hospital – given his current situation following a cardiac arrest in Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener v Finland.
It is added that Calhanoglu can play a similar role to that of Luis Alberto under new Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi during his time at Lazio.
Euro 2020 Exit Opens Door to Imminent Transfer
Given Turkey have been eliminated from Euro 2020, playing their final game on Sunday, June 20, this frees up Calhanoglu to get his next move signed and sealed.
Calhanoglu started all of Turkey’s three games at the competition, assisting their only goal v Switzerland in their last game.
Last season, he played a part in 14 goals for AC Milan as they secured Champions League qualification, with the Turkish midfielder making 33 appearances.
Inter Milan are defending their title for the first time since 2010 and with Conte’s exit, it may not go as smoothly as they hoped. However, the signing of a player – albeit from their city rivals – with Serie A experience can only help their cause.
Calhanoglu has been with AC Milan, where he has made 172 appearances, since 2017. In that time he has played a hand in 80 goals – scoring 32 and assisting 48.
A move to the Nerazzurri is a brave one but one that would see him remain within familiar surroundings.
