How Are Leeds United Signing Junior Firpo?

There have certainly been some eyebrows raised by Leeds United looking to secure the signing of a Barcelona player. Albeit a reserve or rotational left-back. But Barcelona are in rebuild mode. Or rather, Lionel Messi’s new contract fire sale mode. They are urgently trying to offload players in order to accommodate their star man’s contract demands.

Leeds enjoyed a successful return to the top-level last season. And with Marcelo Bielsa showcasing his swashbuckling football style to the world, interest in joining the party seems higher than ever. Victor Orta, Leeds’ Director of Football, has a good success rate in terms of recent transfers. Could Firpo be the next in line?

Questions Cast Aside Over Firpo’s Form

There have been some questions over Firpo’s form in the last season. Is he worth the money being mentioned?

But respected Spanish journalist Guillem Balague has lept to the defense of the new Leeds man, saying: “Junior is not the player seen at Barcelona. What Leeds United is getting is a young energetic fullback that needs space in front of him to make an impact. Better running with the ball than attacking a static defense. Has lost confidence but has lots of it when playing well.”

The need for a high-level left-back has been a requirement for Bielsa’s Leeds United for a few seasons now. Stuart Dallas and Gjanni Alioski have filled in admirably in the past. But for the club to move forward, this was certainly top of the list in terms of positions to improve. Having to fight off the likes of AC Milan and Napoli shows the level of talent in question. Leeds United seem to have pulled off a discounted bargain if everything works out.

Leeds United wanted to try and finalise their transfer dealings before pre-season training really kicked in. Bielsa’s methods are intense and the fitness training that takes place at this time is essential to the success of his system. With Firpo through the door, who is next on the Leeds United wish list?
