According to Mike McGrath of the Telegraph, Napoli are ready to consider a departure for Kalidou Koulibaly this summer. The defender previously had an asking price of £70 million, but will be worth half of that this summer due to his age.
At 30-years-old and with two years remaining on his current contract, Koulibaly may want to have one more attempt in another league. He could have left for the right price a couple of years ago, but a move never came into fruition. Now, however, it seems as though Napoli are ready to consider lesser offers, potentially leaving the defender more likely to leave than ever.
Kalidou Koulibaly Napoli Departure to Be Considered
Potential Suitors
Securing an exit this summer will be no easy task for Koulibaly. In fact, he couldn’t have picked a worse summer. When it comes to Premier League clubs, almost every top side have or are likely to secure a centre-back this summer. Liverpool signed Ibrahima Konate, Manchester United look set to seal Raphael Varane and Arsenal are closing in on Ben White.
Meanwhile, Manchester City, with Ruben Dias and John Stones, are unlikely to target a defender this summer, and Chelsea have been linked with Jules Kounde. Koulibaly has simply reached the age most clubs would rather avoid, especially for the price Napoli may demand.
So, although Napoli are ready to consider his departure, the right offer may never arrive for Kalidou Koulibaly. Perhaps the likes of Paris Saint-Germain will make a move. Rumours are yet to pick up, but the fact they signed Sergio Ramos shows they’re not all too worried about age.
One thing that’s certain is Koulibaly’s quality. He may be 30-years-old, but he still has the ability to be one of the best defenders around. If he does decide to leave, Napoli will be left without a much-needed leader at the back.
