Norwich City Complete Brandon Williams Loan Signing

Brandon Williams Loan

Norwich City have completed their Brandon Williams loan move, the club have confirmed. The Canaries are looking to stay in the Premier League this season, and while a tough start may see them fall behind many of their rivals early in the campaign, the signing of Williams could provide a boost for them, having earned no points from their opening two games.

Struggling for Minutes After First-Team Breakout

Williams broke into the senior team at Old Trafford during the 2019/20 campaign while first-choice left-back Luke Shaw was injured. The young Englishman impressed with his attacking intent when given a chance by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and dealt with the jump in standard between the under-23s and the men’s game superbly well.

He kept Shaw on his toes for the rest of the season, providing competition such that if the former Southampton man were to hit a rough patch of form, Williams would be there to take his place.

During the summer of 2020, however, Alex Telles was signed. The Brazilian moved to the Theatre of Dreams from Porto late in the transfer window, and his presence in the team is claimed to be the reason for Luke Shaw’s magnificent turn in form, with the Englishman becoming one of the world’s best left-backs over the course of the last 12 months.

As Telles had taken Williams’ role, though, the 20-year-old was left to provide depth on the right-hand side of the pitch, playing second fiddle to Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Wan-Bissaka’s ability to play through fixture congestion was relentless throughout the 2020/21 campaign. This saw Williams get just 187 minutes of league football during the season, with the vast majority of these coming in May 2021, when the Red Devils were hit with four games in eight days and hence heavy rotation was required.

A loan move is exactly what Williams needs. At Norwich, he will get regular game-time, and will be able to develop and prove his worth on the Premier League stage.
