Young Liverpool defender Rhys Williams has joined Championship side Swansea City on loan. The centre-back is a big reason why Liverpool are in the Champions League this season having stepped up in absence of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez to partner with Nat Phillips.
Together with Phillips, Williams helped Liverpool to some monumental victories, including Jurgen Klopp’s first-ever win at Old Trafford. The fact is, when the Reds needed someone to step up, what was an inexperienced 19-year-old became a short-term Anfield savour, gaining experience in the Champions League and against some of the best sides in the Premier League.
In addition to the loan, he has signed a new contract with the Reds until 2026.
Rhys Williams Set to Complete Swansea City Loan Move
Looking to Replicate Previous Loanees at Swansea
A move to the Liberty Stadium is perfect for Rhys Williams. We’ve seen plenty of young defenders make a similar type of move to the Welsh club before coming out far better than when they originally arrived.
Take Marc Guehi, for example. The Chelsea man became a fan favourite at the Championship side after impressing many. He got an opportunity, and he took it. Now, Williams has that opportunity, and he will be desperate to follow in the footsteps of the aforementioned Guehi.
In truth, the youngster needed a loan move this season. Of course, throughout the last campaign, he was needed, but now, with a plethora of options for Jurgen Klopp to choose from, Williams would receive little, if any, game time at Anfield this season.
If everyone stays fit, the Reds have Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate to choose from. It’s been a case of so far, so good for Liverpool, too, having shipped just one goal, which came in the recent 1-1 draw with fellow Premier League title contenders Chelsea.
