In a clash of the English and Swedish Champions, it was Chelsea Women who came out on top in a magnificent 7-0 victory over Servette. Emma Hayes’ side put seven past the Swedish side who have now conceded 15 goals in their three Champions League group matches so far. Chelsea eased to victory and could have come away with even more goals.

Rested and Hungry
Emma Hayes notably rested some of her top players for last weekend’s Women’s Super League tie with Aston Villa. This decision paid off as not only did Chelsea defeat Villa but their biggest names were energized and hungry right from the first whistle against Servette. Within 20 minutes Melanie Leupolz, Sam Kerr, and Fran Kirby had scored having been given a rest. By the 26th minute, we had already seen Chelsea’s formidable Kerrby partnership strike gold as Kerr and Kirby helped set each other up for two goals each.
By the half-hour mark, this game was threatening to turn into a rout largely due to Servette’s defensive fragility. Someone clearly hadn’t done their homework on Chelsea which lead to Servette defending high and narrow, leaving Chelsea with space to exploit both out wide and behind the defense. Anyone who has seen this Blues side in action knows that they are only too happy to exploit such a weakness and they did so with aplomb against Servette.
Foot Off The Gas
At half-time, Servette found themselves six goals down against a motivated Chelsea team. It appeared as if the Blues would pile on the misery when Guro Reiten added a seventh five minutes after the restart but that was the final goal of the day as Servette defended better throughout the half and Emma Hayes was quick to make substitutions. The most notable of the substitutions was Maren Mjelde. Mjelde was making her first appearance since suffering a serious knee injury in March against Bristol City.
This win leaves Chelsea in a favourable position in Group A with seven points from their first three group games. They will be confident of repeating today’s result in their next match with Servette which would put them at ten points from their first four games and presumably leave them on the verge of qualification for the next round.
