A 2-0 Papa John’s Trophy loss to Crewe Alexandra has seen manager Richie Wellens sacked by Doncaster Rovers.
The former Swindon Town boss had been in charge for 199 days.

Wellens’ Struggled Tenure
Doncaster Rovers have announced the sacking of Richie Wellens following yet another away loss. Rovers are far from safe in League One sitting 23rd in the table and couldn’t buy an away win if they tried.
Wednesday night’s game saw them travel to Crewe Alexandra with the hope that a trip to Wembley Stadium for the eventual final could give them something to savour this season – instead, they were eliminated in the second round in another dismal away day.
Rovers are struggling this campaign, even their good days are a hard watch at times with the lack of goals in the team.
England Women had a historic night at Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium on Tuesday and matched Doncaster Rovers’ home tally of eight for the League One season within 44 minutes.
Wellens’ side have also been on the receiving end of two 6-0 losses this season – to Rotherham United and Ipswich Town. The feeling was always that it could not get any worse, however, it continues to.
The club have announced that U18s manager Gary McSheffrey, who, like Wellens, played for the club, will take charge of the team v Mansfield Town in the FA Cup second round on Saturday, December 4.
January on the Agenda
In a club statement on doncasterroversfc.co.uk, they stated: “The club’s board have taken the decision that a change is required at this time in order for a permanent appointment to be made in time for the opening of the January transfer window.”
Rovers had a tricky summer window that ended with them scrambling to sign Aiden O’Brien on loan from Sunderland, however, The Black Cats submitted the wrong paperwork and the deal was off, but Doncaster could only blame themselves for waiting so long. They were left with having to search the free-agent market, eventually signing Joe Dodoo, who has scored just one league goal in 14 appearances.
Wellens is the first manager the club have had to sack since the September 2015 dismissal of Paul Dickov. Previous managers Darren Ferguson, Grant McCann and Darren Moore all left of their own will.
