Newcastle United Set For Busy Deadline Day
Newcastle United In Talks With Young French Goalscorer
Despite the signings of Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes, Newcastle United are far from done with January incomings. The club has been linked with French wonderkid Hugo Ekitike for weeks however they have now submitted a new bid, according to Fabrizio Romano. “Newcastle’s proposal for Hugo Ekitike: €25m plus add ons and percentage on clause now discussed. Five-year contract in place.”
The striker is considered one of best talents in French football. Born in 2002, he has been playing at Stade De Reims since 2013. He broke into the first team at the age of 17, before being loaned to Danish side Vejle BK. Despite playing under 30 games in his professional career, he is set to become an integral part of Newcastle United’s future.
The club, currently 18th in the Premier League, have scored the 3rd fewest goals this campaign. Despite multiple additions, they haven’t improved their goalscoring output by much. They signed Kiwi-striker Chris Wood from Burnley, despite fans questioning his attacking output.
The Athletic have now confirmed that Reims had accepted Newcastle’s offer for Ekitike.
Newcastle Finally Acquire Much Needed Defender
Alongside the lack of attacking output in previous months, Newcastle have also been very leaky at the back. They have conceded 43 goals in 21 games, the second-worst record in the league. As previously reported, Brighton centre-back Dan Burn agreed personal terms with Newcastle on Sunday afternoon. Burn has been one of the league’s most impressive players this season, helping Brighton fight for a top 8 place thus far.
Fabrizio Romano announced the deal on Sunday: “Newcastle have found their new centre back. Agreement reached with Brighton for Dan Burn, €15m fee and medical today.” The defender would provide stability at the back, especially with new-signing Kieran Trippier to his right.
Matt Targett Set For Newcastle Medical
After Kieran Trippier, Newcastle needed to sign a second full-back for the left hand side of the defense. The club has been linked to multiple players around Europe such as Mitchel Bakker. However, with hours left to go before the deadline, Newcastle have opted for Targett. The left-back joins from Aston Villa following the recent arrival of Lucas Digne.
Fabrizio Romano reported the completion of the move on Monday morning, stating “Matt Targett will undergo his medical as new Newcastle player in the coming hours.” The player is set to join the Northern English club on loan until the end of the season.
Elsewhere, The Athletic reported that Jesse Lingard would try to push for a move to Newcastle, with him and Ralf Rangnick set to meet on Monday morning.
