AC Milan Renewal Agreed for Theo Hernandez

The History and What’s Next

Hernandez joined Milan from Real Madrid in 2019 in a deal worth €20 million. Since then, he’s been an integral part of the squad. An extension comes as no surprise, as Milan technical director Paolo Maldini specifically picked out Hernandez as a primary target for the club. Maldini is Milan’s biggest legend, but arguably also the top left-back in football history. It’s safe to say he knows a thing or two about the position, so his endorsement of Hernandez certainly carries plenty of weight.

The Frenchman is very solid defensively. His speed and tenacity allow him to cover the best opposing wingers. More than this, however, Hernandez is a major attacking threat. Milan manager Stefano Pioli emphasizes attacking full-backs and Hernandez fits this mold perfectly.

In his first season, Hernandez scored six goals and provided five assists in 33 Serie A games. Last season, he scored seven goals and provided six assists in 33. This season he currently has four goals and five assists to his name in 20 league matches. He flies by opposing defenders with relative ease and can deliver both pinpoint crosses as well as powerful and curling strikes. Hernandez is pivotal to Pioli’s system so it’s easy to see why Milan made it a priority to hold onto him.

Hernandez is also just 24-years-old. Milan finally made it back to the Champions League this season, and are on track to qualify again while staying alive in the Scudetto race. Milan are slowly on the rise once again, and Hernandez plays a major role in this.
