Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has rejected the suggestion that the Magpies could swap goalkeeper Martin Dubravka for Manchester United shot-stopper Dean Henderson.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United will decide Henderson’s future in the coming months. The 24-year-old wants to play regular football, but has failed to displace David de Gea as the club’s number one goalkeeper.
Eddie Howe Rejects Suggestion of Swapping Martin Dubravka for Dean Henderson
Dubravka Never Came Close to Leaving in January
Newcastle boss Howe was bullish in his confirmation that there are no talks taking place with Manchester United over a deal that would see Dubravka head to Old Trafford and Henderson come the other way.
The 44-year-old was asked in his pre-match media briefing ahead of Sunday’s clash with Aston Villa to comment on rumours that Dubravka was offered to Manchester United in the January transfer window, and was clear in his response.
Howe said: “There’s absolutely no truth in Martin Dubravka being offered to Manchester United. From our side, that’s absolutely not the truth.”
33-year-old Dubravka missed the opening five games of the current Premier League season with a foot injury, but has since made 10 appearances in the competition and played in the FA Cup third round defeat by Cambridge United in January.
Dean Henderson Manchester United Future Unclear as Goalkeeper Wants More Minutes
Meanwhile at Old Trafford, England international Dean Henderson faces the prospect of watching the rest of Manchester United’s season unfold from the sidelines, having failed to dislodge David de Gea as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Opportunities for Henderson to impress between now and the end of the campaign look slim, as the Red Devils have already been knocked out of both domestic cup competitions.
Spain international de Gea has had a fine season so far despite the rest of the team’s struggles, and is expected to keep his place in goal as Ralf Rangnick’s side compete for a place in the Premier League’s top four and look to progress deeper in the Champions League.
Henderson’s last appearance came in the FA Cup defeat by Championship opposition Middlesbrough. The match went to penalties after a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford, with the visitors prevailing in the shootout.
