Tottenham Hotspur are currently enduring a rocky run of results under Antonio Conte, but their manager isn’t disillusioned. Any questions of a lack of identity don’t exactly align with the Italian’s recent comments. As per the man himself via Fabrizio Romano, though, he may not necessarily be in agreement with Spurs’ transfer policy of targeting younger players. It is impossible to discuss Conte and what he has brought to the European game without discussing trophies and success in general. Whether it be with Juventus, Chelsea or Inter Milan, the silverware has followed. He had a brief spell at Stamford Bridge that ended on a sour note but at the same time, he won the Premier League and truly revolutionised the modern game in the process.
Conte bringing this theme to Spurs may seem like a pipe-dream currently but it’s not always an easy fix. Jose Mourinho was unable to bring trophies to the white half of North London and as it stands, it seems unlikely that Conte will be able to right that wrong.
Trouble in Paradise
When speaking to Sky recently, Conte explained what the club expect of him. From his quotes though, the question arises of potential issues. When talking about the introduction of young players, he says “This is the vision of the club, yes… I understand.” He showed at Inter Milan that he thinks differently, the likes of Ashley Young, Arturo Vidal and Matteo Darmian being amongst his signings, all of whom were the wrong side of thirty.
“If you want to be competitive quickly, I think you need players with a lot of experience” is what Conte also had to say. His track record supports this quote; the current ideals of Tottenham do not. Juventus duo Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur, who are 21 and 24 respectively, were the two new arrivals in the January transfer window, and they fit more into the transfer style of the club rather than their boss.
