Leeds United Decide to End Marcelo Bielsa Era
Marcelo Bielsa Leaves
On Saturday, February 26, 2022 Fabrizio Romano reported: “Marcelo Bielsa’s set to leave Leeds after poor performances this season. Lawyers now discussing his exit.” Bielsa had been in charge at Leeds since 2018 when the club were in the Championship. After a tough week for the Argentinian boss, it seemed a matter of time before this decision was to be made final. Leeds United confirmed they are letting Bielsa go on Sunday, with the following statement: “Leeds United can today confirm the club have parted company with head coach Marcelo Bielsa.”
Chairman Andrea Radrizzani added: “This has been the toughest decision I have had to make during my tenure at Leeds United, taking into account all the success Marcelo has had at the club.
“He changed the culture of the club and brought a winning mentality to us all.”
Recent Struggles
Leeds are coming off a 4-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in which they looked second best all game. Speaking after the match Bielsa commented on the result: “What’s concrete is that in the two ways we faced the game, with a more conservative profile in the first half, and with a more daring profile in the second, neither of the two ways gave a result.
“Obviously it’s not just this game, but a succession of results. Against these type of results there is no way of not feeling badly.”
Leeds came in to the Tottenham game after a 6-0 loss to Liverpool on Wednesday, February 23, 2022.
The heavy losses the past two games are a microcosm of the season for Leeds so far. Having picked up 23 points from their 26 games played, Leeds currently sit 16th in the table. They’ve won just five games and have a goal difference of -31, second worst in the league.
It has been a season marred with injuries which has added to their struggles. First team players Patrick Bamford and Kalvin Phillips have had spells on the sidelines after their standout performances last year.
Replacement
It is believed that Jesse Marsch will become the next manager of the Premier League side. Marsch would become only the second American to manage in the Premier League, after Bob Bradley at Swansea. Marsch was let go by RB Leipzig in December after a rough season and has previously been in charge at RB Salzburg and NY Red Bulls.
