Arsenal will allow two midfielders, Lucas Torreira and Mohamed Elneny, to leave the club permanently this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Torreira returned to Fiorentina and is enjoying a solid season. The Italian club are looking to use their buy option clause to secure the midfielder for €15 million. Elneny, on the other hand, sees his contract expire this summer. There are currently no talks regarding a renewal.
Arsenal Midfielders Set to Leave Permanently
The State of the Midfield
Torreira has been on loan, so of course, he has not played for Arsenal this season. Elneny has seven Premier League appearances as well as three Carabao Cup outings.
Arsenal are enjoying a strong Premier League season, sitting at fourth place and in the Champions League qualifying zone. They’re three points above north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur at fifth, but the Gunners also have a match in hand. For this reason, they’re confident they can continue to play well and improve without the services of Torreira and Elneny.
The team has a solid crop of midfielders, although many are more attacking-minded such as Martin Odegaard and Emile Smith Rowe. Bukayo Saka can play in an advanced role or as a wingback. Arsenal’s central midfielders include Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka, and Albert Sambi Lokonga. At first glance, this group is very young and that’s exactly what the club is pushing for.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles can return from loan with AS Roma, while Marseille hold an option to buy Matteo Guendouzi.
Arsenal are on pace to make the Champions League. This, of course, is a major achievement after a few years of mediocrity. Should the club qualify, they will surely have a larger transfer war chest than usual. Arsenal will likely invest plenty of funds into further strengthening the midfield with players of top calibre.
There can also be movement from the current Arsenal squad, as Xhaka has been rumoured to depart for quite a while and almost joined Jose Mourinho and Roma last summer.
