Barcelona president Joan Laporta has hinted that the club do not have the financial means to sign Wolves winger Adama Traore on a permanent basis, meaning the Spain international could be set for a return to the Premier League this summer.
Laporta also provided an update on the future of 39-year-old right-back Dani Alves, and confirmed that the club intend to extend the contract of midfielder Sergi Roberto, who is seen as a key player by manager Xavi.
Barcelona President Joan Laporta Suggests That Adama Traore Loan Will Not be Made Permanent
Financial Fair Play a Factor in the Decision
Spain international Traore joined Barcelona on loan from Premier League side Wolves towards the end of this year’s January transfer window.
That deal is set to officially expire at the end of June, and Laporta has said the club may be unable to turn it into a permanent transfer. As such, a return to English football looks to be the likeliest outcome for Traore at this stage.
Laporta said: “Adama Traore’s buy option is very high. And we have the Fair Play [to think about]. Let’s see, we also have the [Francisco] Trincao case with Wolves.”
22-year-old Portugal international Trincao is currently at Wolves on loan from Barcelona, and has performed impressively during his stay in the Premier League. Traore made 11 La Liga appearances for Barcelona following his January return to his boyhood club.
Laporta Also Adresses Dani Alves and Sergi Roberto Futures
One player whose future seems a lot more certain is Traore’s fellow Spain international Sergi Roberto. The central midfielder has developed a reputation as something of a utility man throughout his long Barcelona career, but is certainly valued by his head coach.
On the 30-year-old’s future, Laporta added: “We plan to extend Sergi Roberto’s contract, for sure. Xavi wants him to stay.”
The same cannot be said with any conviction regarding Brazilian right-back Dani Alves, whose future is up in the air a year after he completed a sensational return to Barcelona last November.
Alves will be out of contract this summer, and Laporta was non-committal when discussing his future, saying: “Dani Alves? These are technical decisions to be made soon.”
