Hickey Rejected Bayern Munich, Not the Other Way Around

Aaron Hickey will depart Bologna for Brentford. The 20-year-old will cost the Bees around £19 million, including add-ons. An official statement about the signing is expected to be released later this week.

In 2020, Hickey played at Hearts of Midlothian, a year that also saw him reject Bayern Munich in favour of Bologna. Such a decision might seem foolish to some, but it undoubtedly gave the Scotsman more playing time, which is invaluable at his age. The 20-year-old is a versatile player capable of playing as a central midfielder despite primarily being a left-back.

Hickey has received widespread praise from his time at Hearts.

“He’s like a 24 or 25-year-old in a teenager’s body. He understands the game already. He has massive potential. I’ve been really impressed with him. He’s very mature for his age, he’s composed, has good physique, ticks all the boxes”, Hearts manager Robbie Nielson told the BBC earlier this year.

The Rise of Brentford

Brentford have experienced a rise that can’t be understated. As recently as 2008, they were in the fourth tier of English football. The Bees have worked their way up since then, being high up in the Championship by 2015, a year which saw them narrowly lose out on a Premier League spot in the play-offs.

After a few more seasons in the Championship, Brentford finally earned a place in the top tier of English football again. They experienced a good 2021/22 season, finishing 13th after being freshly promoted. Still, it’s often said the second season is the hardest, and that will be Brentford’s first major test, even though The Bees have already proven a lot.
