The wait is over, the 2022/23 League One season will commence this weekend. Plymouth Argyle will get their new campaign, the first full one under Steven Schumacher, on home soil. Recently relegated Barnsley will be in town and there will be a number of new signings on display for the hosts. One of which could be the latest arrival, Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee Nigel Lonwijk.

Nigel Lonwijk Arrives Loan for the Season
Who is Nigel Lonwijk?
The six-foot-five-inch defender is just 19 years old and has an interesting profile. The Dutchman joins the club on loan from Premier League outfit Wolves, having made the move to Molineux in January 2020 after playing youth football with PSV Eindhoven.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Steven Schumacher’s said: “He is quick and aggressive in his defending and has shown good ability in possession of the ball, most notably whilst on loan last season in the Eredivisie.”
The loan spell being alluded to came with Fortuna Sittard, where he made 22 appearances and scored once. They narrowly avoided relegation.
Nigel Lonwijk isn’t the first Wolves man to don the green and white of the Pilgrims. Current number 11 Niall Ennis was contracted to the West Midlands side but didn’t make a single appearance for them, going out on loan a number of times. His permanent departure from Wolves was sealed with this move to Devon and besides a brief spell with injury, he performed well.

Where the Defender Will Fit in at Home Park
Nigel Lonwijk isn’t the first arrival this summer in the defensive department. Youngster Bali Mumba arrived on loan a couple of weeks back from Norwich City to great acclaim. He is primarily a right full-back whilst Lonwijk operates as a centre-half. The trio of James Wilson, Dan Scarr and Macauley Gillesphey were particularly impressive for Argyle last term in the middle of that back five and so the new arrival will add to that.
The gaffer added: “I’m very pleased to have Nigel join us on loan from Wolves. He is a versatile defender who can play in any position in our back three.”
Nigel Lonwijk is the sixth signing made by Schumacher this summer and it remains to be seen if there will be any more. There have been smart additions all over the pitch thus far.
