Dramatic Win Over the Swans

Oxford progressed to the second round of the Carabao Cup with victory over Championship outfit Swansea City.

A much changed Oxford side found themselves two goals down but got back into the game in fortuitous style when Alex Rodriguez Gorrin closed down the Swans goalkeeper’s clearance before Cameron Brannagan levelled the match in stoppage time with a deflected free kick.

Summer signing Ed McGinty, who made a mistake in the build-up to the opening goal, saved one of the Swansea penalties during the shootout as Oxford successfully converted all five from 12 yards.

Oxford United Drawn at Home Against Crystal Palace in Second Road of the Carabao Cup

Oxford have been drawn at home against Crystal Palace in the second round of the Carabao Cup. The tie will take place on Tuesday, August 23.

It’s the first competitive meeting between the two sides since 1998, although Brannagan did score in a pre-season defeat at Selhurst Park two years ago.

The Eagles also visited Grenoble Road on August 4, 2001, which was Oxford’s first game at their new stadium.

Kyle Joseph Joins the U’s

Oxford then boosted their attacking options with the arrival of striker Kyle Joseph on a season-long loan from Swansea.

The 20-year-old has featured for Russell Martin’s side throughout pre-season but is yet to make a dent in the senior side, with most of his appearances coming in the U21s.

The former Wigan Athletic forward also spent time on loan at Cheltenham Town, where he scored four times in 22 appearances before being recalled to the Swans team, in which he managed ten substitute appearances.

Speaking to the club’s official website, he said: “I’m delighted to be here and have already sensed a good feeling around the club.

“The team have made a great start to the season so I can’t wait to get going myself and help the team be successful this year.”

Karl Robinson added: “Kyle offers us a great option in our forward positions and with his high energy I’m confident he will fit in straight away.

“He’s a young, pacey player who will provide us with another attacking threat.”

Jack Stevens Joins Port Vale On Loan

Following the arrival of McGinty, goalkeeper Jack Stevens has joined League One rivals Port Vale on loan.

The move may have come as a surprise for many U’s fans as Stevens has featured regularly in the last 18 months.

However, the move is to ensure the 25-year-old with regular game time before a return to Oxford in the summer.

Oxford United Youth Player Joins Banbury On Loan

Oxford youngster Will Owens has joined Andy Whing’s Banbury United on loan.

The left-sided player, who featured in large parts of Oxford’s pre-season, will be looking to help the Puritans in their first season in the National League North.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Karl Robinson said: “It’s another loan that works well for all concerned.

“Will gets to play games at a very competitive level and we know that Andy Whing and everyone at Banbury will look after him, in the same way that they helped James Golding last season.”

Loss at Bristol Rovers

The U’s ended the week with a second defeat of the new League One season.

Robinson’s side lost 1-0 at Bristol Rovers in a game in which Oxford struggled to get into the game.

Sam Long hit the bar and James Henry saw an effort from eight yards out sail over, but that was as good as it got for the visitors.
