After a first two matches that left Manchester United at the bottom of the table, Old Trafford welcomes Liverpool as the Red Devils attempt to pull themselves out of the slump. See Last Word on Football’s prediction for Erik ten Hag’s choice of starting lineup on August 22nd, 2022.
Predicting the Manchester United Starting Lineup
How Manchester United Have Lined Up Recently
Manchester United line up with David de Gea in goal, as the club has no real depth to speak of in that position. Harry Maguire plays alongside Lisandro Martinez at centre-back, with the captain retaining his role in the side despite several mistakes. Luke Shaw is the regular starting left-back, with Diogo Dalot consistently appearing for the club at right back.
Ten Hag’s midfield features three of Scott McTominay, Fred, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes depending on the side’s needs. The three support Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford on the flanks, with Cristiano Ronaldo playing at centre-forward.
Manchester United Injuries to Consider
The Red Devils have some injuries throughout their squad. Victor Lindelof’s absence removes a centre-back option from the squad, with left-back Brandon Williams also missing due to fitness issues. Anthony Martial is the club’s main miss in attack, as the winger-cum-striker faces a last-minute fitness test in order to secure a place in the side.
Predicted Manchester United Starting Lineup
Despite a severe goalkeeping error in the fixture against Brentford, De Gea retains his position in the squad. Maguire keeps his place amidst rumours of dropping the player, with Martinez using his pace as a means of battling Mohamed Salah’s darting runs inside. Shaw and Dalot remain the best options Erik ten Hag has in the wing-back positions.
As Liverpool have a higher chance of attacking Manchester United and staying on the front foot, missing incoming signing Casemiro is a significant disadvantage. However, McTominay and Fred provide some stability and defensive acumen at the base of midfield, with Bruno Fernandes’ excellent passing attributes sitting ahead of the two. Eriksen drops to the bench but could see a start if the Dutch manager is feeling adventurous and wants to attack Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Whilst Rashford and Sancho have had poor output this season to date, they are the best players for using their pace to get in behind Liverpool’s back line, with Anthony Elanga lacking the right match experience. Ronaldo should lead the line.
Current Odds: Manchester United vs Liverpool
Liverpool are clear favourites for the win at 4/7, with the Red Devils the clear outsiders at 4/1. The draw is the second most likely outcome at 10/3.
