Liverpool are continuing their chase for a new midfielder before the transfer window closes. According to Fabrizio Romano, two targets have been assessed by the scouting team, but large price tags make them unviable. Jurgen Klopp confirmed earlier this week that his team would search for a new midfielder before the end of the window.
Liverpool Midfielder Hunt Continues
Liverpool Eye Several Domestic Options
RB Leipzig’s Konrad Laimer and Ruben Neves of Wolves are both admired by the team at Anfield. Neither player looks likely to become the next Liverpool midfielder, with both playing significant parts in their squad and presumably having high price tags as a result.
Sheffield United prodigy Sander Berge has been linked with the club. Fans have also called for the club to join the hunt for Leicester’s Youri Tielemans. The Belgian international could be available at a reduced price, with only one year left on his contract.
Elsewhere, Matheus Leal suggests a move for Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz could be on the cards, with a £20 million offer already tabled. He also expects Villa to push for a higher fee, although these reports are unconfirmed.
Midfield Targets Across Europe
Klopp is a known admirer of Borussia Dortmund youngster Jude Bellingham. The England international is one of the more promising options for an elite club in Europe, but Dortmund were unwilling to lose him and Erling Haaland in the same window. The Bundesliga club have rejected several approaches in this window.
Aurelien Tchouameni was another young option with room to grow, before his £72 million move to Real Madrid. In a press conference before the side face Newcastle, Klopp said: “We were going for a midfielder, but the midfielder decided to go to another club.”
Nico Barella at Inter Milan is another potential option, with clear quality that the Reds could benefit from. The Italian has been linked with a move to Merseyside all summer, but Inter are unwilling to let him leave thanks to his recent new deal with the club.
Why is the Liverpool Midfielder Chase Necessary?
The Reds are currently facing an injury crisis in midfield, which has magnified their issues. Curtis Jones, Thiago, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita are all sidelined, albeit some are returning from injury. After the centre-back crisis which plagued their 2020/21 season, fans are anxious to see additional reinforcements. A new Liverpool midfielder could be a necessity for the club.
