Chelsea are still not assured to make a move for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez in the January transfer window, confirms Fabrizio Romano. The Blues had a bid rejected for him in the summer, something which left the Mexico international frustrated.
Chelsea Not Guaranteed to Make Edson Alvarez Bid in January
Alvarez Comments on Failed Chelsea Move
The 25-year-old midfielder recently admitted his frustrations at not being able to join the London giants in the summer. He told ESPN: “I am very disappointed about it [failed move to Chelsea]. But I am convinced that one day a big club will come.”

Alvarez said: “We never expected Chelsea to put in another bid at the end of August. It was a difficult situation. Ajax couldn’t do anything.”
The Blues made a £43 million offer for him towards the end of the summer transfer window, but the Eredivisie side swiftly declined it as they did not want to sell any more players after having already sold the likes of Antony and Lisandro Martinez to Manchester United earlier in the window.
Chelsea’s Stance on Future Alvarez Move
Romano adds that it’s possible that Chelsea will make another move for the Mexican midfielder in the January transfer window, but it’s not guaranteed as of yet. The Premier League heavyweights have had a significant change at the board level, appointing new individuals for the recruitment process. The new hires are expected to have meetings with Graham Potter and Todd Boehly to discuss winter transfers in the next few months.

The Blues still appreciate the quality of Alvarez and he remains a highly-rated player in their eyes. However, they are not currently holding any talks with his agents or Ajax over a winter transfer. Romano states all that will depend on whether or not Ajax are even interested in discussing a transfer or are open to selling in the winter, which isn’t assured yet.
Alvarez has been impressing many since joining the Eredivisie side in 2019. He’s made 119 appearances for the Dutch club, scoring 10 goals and providing five assists. The defensive midfielder is a self-proclaimed Manchester City supporter and has voiced his dream to play for the reigning Premier League champions in his career. Despite that, he also seems to be interested in a move for Chelsea – the possibility of which looks grim at this point.
