Manchester United Target Ivan Toney Being Investigated Over Gambling Allegations

Toney Opens Up on the Gambling Controversy

The Daily Mail has stated that the FA are looking into the case of Toney gambling on football over the course of this year. However, he hasn’t been charged for it, as there is still reportedly an investigation going on to look at whether he actually even did it or not. The 26-year-old has gained United’s interest, but they didn’t make any offer for him in the summer.

The investigation also relates to allegations that he gambled before playing for The Bees, but there are no suggestions that he ever bet against his own team. Brentford have acknowledged the allegations against their star striker, but have thus far refused to comment. Toney, however, has reacted to the news with a message on Twitter, assuring everyone that he is cooperating with the authorities on this matter.

He wrote: “I’m aware of a story about me in a national newspaper today. I have been assisting the Football Association with their enquiries and will not be making any comment until such an investigation has reached its conclusion. I am a proud Englishman and it has always been my childhood dream to play for my country at a World Cup finals.”

Toney’s Career Recapped

Toney impressed again in his club’s recent 2-0 win over Brighton, with his manager Thomas Frank describing the striker’s performance as “eye-catching.” Toney has had a real rags-to-riches story in English Football. From playing in the third and fourth divisions of the English pyramid a few years ago with the likes of Peterborough United and Northampton Town to becoming one of the most prolific strikers in the Premier League.

The 26-year-old has scored 55 goals and provided 19 assists in 103 appearances for Brentford, including 20 goals in 46 Premier League appearances, helping him gain attention from top clubs. He’s already scored 8 goals this season in the league, more than the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Darwin Nunez and Gabriel Jesus. Toney has been tipped to be a part of Gareth Southgate’s England team for the Qatar World Cup, but it remains to be seen if that will be achieved with the reported ongoing investigation.
