Chelsea’s ‘Strategic’ Midfielder Gives Fans Update on Future Amid Barcelona Links

Jorginho

Chelsea midfielder Jorginho has refused to confirm whether he plans on signing a long-term contract with Chelsea. This comes with the Italian entering the last six months of his deal, meaning he will be allowed to talk to other clubs for potential pre-contract agreements in January 2023.

Jorginho Gives Update on Chelsea Future

Jorginho ‘Wants to Stay’ at Chelsea

There is a lot of uncertainty over whether or not Jorginho will stay at Stamford Bridge after this season. He has been persistently linked to a move to La Liga side Barcelona, who hope to sign him on a free transfer in the summer and have plans for him to potentially replace Sergio Busquets in their midfield line.

When asked about whether he wants to stay at Chelsea and his plans for the future, Jorginho told Talksport: “Of course I want to stay, I love Chelsea. The thing is, I’m not going to think about that right now. I need to think about winning games otherwise it’s a problem.”

This is a rather interesting answer from the 31-year-old, who has been used quite often by Graham Potter since he took over the club from former manager Thomas Tuchel. Jorginho is yet to publicly urge the London side to tie him to a long-term deal, as it remains whether he can agree to stay at the club for many more years.

Jorginho’s Career at Chelsea So Far Recapped

The Italian midfielder was brought to Stamford Bridge by Maurizio Sarri in 2018 after the two had formed a solid bond during their years at Napoli. However, after winning the Europa League title in his first season at Chelsea, Jorginho saw Sarri walk out of the club and has worked with a couple of managers in the club ever since.

After struggling to find much success under Frank Lampard, the 31-year-old had his best-ever season in the 2020-21 campaign. He helped Chelsea win their second Champions League title under Thomas Tuchel and would also achieve success on the international stage, winning the Euro 2020 title with Italy in 2021. That helped him achieve some individual success, with Jorginho winning the 2021 UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award as well as finishing third in the Ballon d’Or rankings.

The Italian international has since experienced a drop in form and has been a bit inconsistent this campaign, which is why Chelsea are yet to extend his deal. Jorginho, who was called as a ‘strategic player’ by Tuchel last year, has made 19 appearances for the Blues this season – scoring 3 goals.
